Cisco ASR 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers aggregate multiple WAN connections and network services including encryption and traffic management, and forward them across WAN connections at line speeds from 2.5 to 200 Gbps. The routers contain both hardware and software redundancy in an industry-leading high-availability design. The latest addition to the Cisco ASR 1000 Series is the Cisco ASR 1002-HX router. The new router supports up to 100 Gbps in a 2-rack-unit (2RU) form factor. It also has 8 built-in 10-Gigabit Ethernet (GE) ports and 8 1-GE ports, with the Ethernet port adapter (EPA) slot for expansion. The Cisco ASR 1000 Series supports Cisco IOS® XE Software, a modular operating system with modular packaging, feature velocity, and powerful resiliency. The Cisco ASR 1000 Series Embedded Services Processors (ESPs), which are based on Cisco Flow Processor™ technology, accelerate many advanced features such as crypto-based access security; Network Address Translation (NAT), thread defense with Cisco Zone-Based Firewall (ZBFW), deep packet inspection (DPI), Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE), and a diverse set of data-center-interconnect (DCI) features. These services are implemented in Cisco IOS XE Software without the need for additional hardware support.

The Layer 3 Cisco 1- and 2-Port Fast Ethernet High-Speed WAN interface cards (HWICs) (see Figures 1 and 2) supported on the Cisco 1841, Cisco 2800, and Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers offer small-to-large-sized businesses and enterprise branch-office customers the option to add Layer 3 routed ports with many advanced features, including quality-of-service (QoS) and rate-limiting capabilities. The Cisco Fast Ethernet HWICs are singlewide interface cards, available as a 1-port HWIC (HWIC-1FE) and as a 2-port HWIC (HWIC-2FE), that provide Cisco modular and integrated services routers with additional Layer 3 routed ports.

The 8-port asynchronous HWIC (HWIC-8A), illustrated in Figure 3-9, provides 8 asynchronous RS-232 interfaces in DTE format, at data rates of up to 230.4 kbps.

The Cisco ASR 1000 Series Router, a versatile midrange integrated services router, can be deployed in broadband aggregation, enterprise network, service provider edge, IP Radio Access Network (IP RAN), and many other network applications. Chassis: Cisco ASR1002-Fixed, ASR 1002, 1004, 1006 or 1013 models (ASR1002-F, ASR1002, ASR1004, ASR1006 or ASR1013, respectively) Cisco ASR 1000 Series Route Processor: ASR1000-RP1 or ASR1000-RP2, memory, hard disk, and USB flash memory token. The Route Processor is integrated in the ASR1002-F chassis. Cisco ASR 1000 Series Embedded Services Processor (ESP): 5-, 10-, 10-N-, 20- and 40-Gbps ESPs (ASR1000-ESP5, ASR1000-ESP10, ASR1000-ESP10-N, ASR1000-ESP20 and ASR1000-ESP40, respectively). The ESP is integrated in the ASR1002-F chassis (at 2.5-Gbps).
